With tension high, two leading US national security officials suggested on August 13 that a military confrontation with North Korea is not imminent but that the possibility of war still looms.

Kim Jong Un's government has always denounced the joint exercises as a provocative ruse created to hide a USA invasion.

Facing what seems like a very real threat from the United States, who were outraged at the comments regarding firing missiles towards Guam and some harsh sanctions from its disgruntled ally China, Pyongyang has backtracked and indicated that it will closely watch the actions of the USA before deciding whether or not to fire any missiles at it. They also strongly condemned Pyongyang's remarks regarding firing missiles towards Guam, urging North Korea to refrain from making further provocations.
