UF denies National Policy Institute's event space request in wake of Charlottesville

From the No Nazis at UF- Protest Richard Spencer Facebook event

The National Policy Institute's request for an appearance on the Gainesville campus on September 12 was not sponsored by student groups or any other organizations "affiliated with the university", Fuchs said in a statement posted in the immediate aftermath of the deadly violence in Charlottesville. He vowed to take UF to court.

"My strong support for the right of students and faculty to invite speakers to campus to address whatever views they think worth discussing does not mean that I personally think that all views are worth discussing". He said he created the group because he knew if there was going to be a way to get people together against Spencer speaking at UF, they had to assemble sooner rather than later.

Spencer said he was angry with the university's decision, and his supporters planned to file a legal challenge. She said the document Padgett signed was a preliminary estimate for facility costs, not a rental contract.

For safety reasons, the university will not allow Spencer to speak.

"Although the event is now limited to the UF Campus, it would be foolish to think that any protests / counter protests would not occur in our city limits".

Fuchs said UF is dedicated to free speech and public discourse, but the First Amendment doesn't require risk of imminent violence to students.

Fuchs said the decision stemmed from the potential for violence, not the words or ideas.

Spencer, a leading figure in the white nationalist movement, has popularized the term "alt-right" to describe a fringe movement that is a mix of white nationalist, white supremacist, anti-Semitic and anti-immigration beliefs. But the professor to whom Spencer reached out had no interest int the alt-right figurehead's request. A 32-year-old woman was killed during the rally when a vehicle plowed into counterprotesters. The man behind the white supremacist group Identity Evropa is expected to rally supporters the next day in Berkeley during an event titled "No to Marxism in America", the Mercury News added. The SPLC monitors hate groups nationwide.

Julin's views reflected those of multiple First Amendment lawyers interviewed Monday.

"UF administration, staff and campus police are developing a security plan for the potential event and are working with colleagues across the country who have had similar events on their campus".

The U.S. Justice Department said it will review the violence, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions told ABC the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer, 32, met the definition of domestic terrorism.

On Monday, Texas A&M University announced that a "White Lives Matter" event scheduled to be held on its campus September 11 had been canceled.
