The six different flags that fly at the park are the six different flags that have flown over Texas throughout history.

Of the 20 Six Flags parks in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, one in San Antonio, Texas and another in Georgia flew the same six flags as the one in Arlington.

Six Flags Over Texas has flown the "Stars and Bars" Confederate States of America flag since 1961, which was the first official flag of the Confederacy.

A statement explained the theme park's reasons for the move, after it had previously declined to remove the controversial Confederate flag. Also removed were the flags of four other nations that have ruled over Texas, leaving only United States flags flying in their place.

"We always choose to focus on celebrating the things that unite us versus those that divide us", Six Flags spokeswoman Sharon Parker told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The 212-acre theme park opened August 5, 1961. Defenders of the monuments and flags believe it is important to preserve them in public spaces for historical awareness, while those in favor of removing Confederate markers say their presence in public spaces is offensive, oppressive and unnecessary, and that history can effectively be preserved in museums and books. Her reasoning was that their flag was the original Confederate flag, not the second, more recognizable version that's become synonymous with white supremacy.

In nearly all prominent displays, the well-known Confederate battle flag with the blue X adorned with stars on a red field is not flown.

The park's decision comes after a "Unite the Right" neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Va., turned deadly when a auto rammed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring some 19 other people.
