New Zealand big winners in Rugby Championship opener despite Australia fightback

New Zealand Rugby reacted swiftly to reports about Jerome Kaino's personal life

The Wallabies' pride demanded they grab a foothold somewhere, and they came back with tries to winger Curtis Rona on debut, centers Tevita Kuridrani and Kurtley Beale, who was playing his first test since the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and fullback Israel Folau.

Damien McKenzie, Rieko Ioane and Liam Squire had starring roles as New Zealand ran in eight tries to four to beat Australia 54-34 yesterday in the first test of the Rugby Championship.

WALLABIES coach Michael Cheika remains adamant that assistant Nathan Grey is the right man to lead his side's defence.

"I can't overestimate how angry I am at seeing an Australian team have skills that are non-existent", said Lynagh on Sky Sports.

The Wallabies conceded a point a minute in the first half and missed a staggering 35 tackles.

"It was pretty plain to see that our defence wasn't good enough at all", Cheika said. "It's not attitude, it's maybe just that little bit of doubt creeps in".

'Passing and catching and making tackles and trusting the bloke beside you are pretty basic, even at schoolboy level'. "The adherence to way we want to defend and the tackling has to be better", Cheika told a news conference.

"There's no one-two step process for that type of stuff, that comes down to a deep belief between players".

But nearly right off the restart the All Blacks showed their attacking skills with the Wallabies unable to make their tackles allowing them easy open space.

Multiple times in the lead-up to Saturday, players and coaches stressed that poor results in Super Rugby from Australian franchises would have no bearing on what happened come Test season.

"I think in the second half we let frustration strangle us a little bit", All Blacks captain Read said.

Squire, on his return to the All Black went over after slick work from Rieko Ioane, before he himself snuck in wide on Australia's 22 metre line, to make the scores 6-12.

And the hits just kept coming for the Wallabies with Ben Smith getting in on the try scoring action as nothing was going right for the home side.

Wallabies: Israel Folau, Henry Speight, Samu Kerevi, Kurtley Beale, Curtis Rona, Bernard Foley, Will Genia; Scott Sio, Stephen Moore, Allan Alaalatoa, Rory Arnold, Adam Coleman, Ned Hanigan, Michael Hooper, Sean McMahon.

Despite acknowledging the hard assignment, Cheika backed his team to improve, though he ruled out wholesale changes to the team.

"As I said, there's no point us sitting here trying to talk about how he feels and if you're struggling with that, put yourself in his shoes and imagine what would be said and how you'd feel".

"The Review is being presented to the NZR Board this month and we are looking to make that public sometime in September".

"It's about winning the game and doing things that you are proud of".

"But that's as good as we could have had it".

"We want to keep the series alive".

They come just days after they were forced to re-open an investigation into the behaviour of half-back Aaron Smith after he was caught in a tryst with a lawyer in an airport toilet.
