Russian ambassador to Sudan latest in string of Kremlin diplomat deaths

Russian Ambassador to Sudan Migayas Shirinskiy died Wednesday in the capital Khartoum, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The 62-year-old appeared to have symptoms consistent with a serious heart seizure, he added. The Russian Foreign Ministry has verified the news.

Embassy staff said he showed signs of a heart attack, and that they called an ambulance but doctors were unable to save him.

A senior police official in sudan who requested anonymity told AFP that, according to the first elements of the investigation, the track criminal was dismissed.

Shirinsky, an Arabic speaker, was appointed ambassador to Khartoum in 2013 and previously worked in several countries in the Middle East including Yemen and Saudi Arabia, the Sudan Tribune said. The ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, was shot by an assailant in Ankara in December 2016. The body was taken to a morgue in a Khartoum hospital and procedures were initiated to send it back to Russian Federation. "As soon as we get detailed information from our embassy's staff in Khartoum, we'll release a report on the circumstances of death of our colleague".

"We grieve to announce that on August 23 in Khartoum the Russian ambassador to Sudan, M Shirinsky, died", it said.

"Mirgayas Shirinsky was a top professional who dedicated his life to diplomatic service", Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a press briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

State news broadcaster Russian Federation 24 reports that Skirinskiy, born in 1954 and appointed to his position in 2013, died while swimming in his pool.
