Qatar restores diplomatic ties to Iran amid regional crisis

Saudi Arabia Working With Iraq to Freeze out Iran

Qatar will reinstate its diplomatic relationship with Iran, its foreign ministry announced Thursday.

In a statement on their website, the country's Ministry of Foreign affairs said: "Qatar announced that its ambassador to Tehran will return to resume his diplomatic duties".

Commenting on Qatar's recent statement that it chose to return its ambassador to Tehran and "strengthen ties in all fields" with the Islamic Republic, Iranian political analyst Hassan Hanizadeh explained to Sputnik Iran what this move might actually signify.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry in a statement said that Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani spoke by phone to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has denounced Qatar's recent decision to restore full diplomatic ties with Iran, accusing Doha of undermining chances to resolve a rift between several Arab countries of the Persian Gulf and Qatar.

Mediation attempts led by countries such as Kuwait and the U.S. have so far failed to make headway toward settling the crisis. Qatar pulled its ambassador in early 2016 after Saudi Arabia's execution of a prominent Shiite cleric sparked attacks on two Saudi diplomatic posts in Iran, a move to show solidarity with the kingdom.

However, Qatar's relationship with Tehran has been warmer than the more aggressive stance adopted by other Saudi allies such as the UAE and Bahrain.

Qatar and Iran share a massive offshore natural gas field that requires communication between the two countries. The coalition of Arab countries have imposed travel restrictions and economic sanctions on Qatar since June.

"The solution to the Gulf crisis is clear", he said.

Saudi Arabia topped the three blockading Gulf countries with total number of violations 2,045 out of total 3,446 complaints received by the NHRC so far, which makes the 60 percent of total human rights violations committed.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash reacted on Tuesday by saying Qatar was burning its bridges and prolonging the Persian Gulf crisis. "The wisdom that we hoped for was completely absent".

In Washington, State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters on Thursday that the USA remains "very deeply concerned with the status of the dispute" between Qatar and the Saudi-led bloc.
