Rohingyas die as boat capsizes in Naf river

44 Rohingya protestors nabbed over illegal rally

According to the UN's International Organisation for Migration (IOM), as many as 18,500 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar's restive Rakhine state within five days ending Wednesday, 30 August.

Thousands of Rohingyas, who fled their homes in the violence-hit state, are waiting on the borders to seek shelter in Bangladesh.

The corpses of 12 children and eight adults were pulled early Thursday from the Naf River, Ariful Islam, commanding officer of the Bangladesh Border Guard in Teknaf, told CNN.

Plumes of smoke billowed from several burning villages in the worst-hit section of the state, according to an AFP reporter on a government-led trip to the area, as the violence showed little sign of abating despite security sweeps by Myanmar's police and troops. The Myanmar government has kept the matters indoor till date and has denied access to any worldwide aid groups.

One arrival, Mohammed Rashid, 45, wore a surgical dressing under his eye, saying bullet splinters injured him after the Myanmar army opened fire on a group of Rohingya.

Currently, some 400,000 immigrant Rohingya Muslims live in Bangladesh.

Violence in Myanmar's western Rakhine state has driven thousands of ethnic Rohingya Muslims fleeing toward Bangladesh for safety, along with a smaller exodus of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

Citing Main Uddin Khan, in-charge of Tekhanf police station, the daily reported that bodies of 10 children and nine women were discovered, but their identities are yet to be ascertained.

A security clampdown launched in October a year ago in Maungdaw, where Rohingya form the majority, led to a United Nations report on human rights violations by security forces that indicated crimes against humanity. "And it seems to be spreading from south to north".

That prompted a months-long security crackdown by Myanmar's army which left scores dead and forced 87,000 people to flee to Bangladesh.

The Naf river that divides the two countries is narrow in places, but the Rohingya are increasingly crossing where the river is wider, or even venturing out to sea, after Bangladeshi authorities toughened their border patrols. Many had hoped that Myanmar's democratically elected government, which took over 18 months ago amid a transition from military rule, could take steps to alleviate the conflict and end the underlying human rights abuses of the Rohingya minority. We also urge the global community to consider targeted sanctions against Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, to suspend current training programmes with the Burma Army and to press the Government of Burma to engage with existing UN Human Rights Council mechanisms and address reports of severe human rights violations underway in northern Burma.

Aid workers say contingency stocks of materials are low and their biggest problem is extreme overcrowding in makeshift settlements.
