ACTION ALERT: NewsHour Treats Ethnic Cleansing in Myanmar as Matter of Opinion

Ahmed Ullah is a Rohingya refugee who lives in Kitchener

Myanmar's government brands more than one million Rohingya Muslims in the country as "illegal immigrants" from Bangladesh, launching a deadly and brutal crackdown on them. They have faced decades of discrimination and persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are denied citizenship despite centuries-old roots in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, 13 September, the UNSC strongly condemned the violence against ethnic Rohingyas.

Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who earlier this week canceled a planned trip to the UN General Assembly, has been heavily criticized for not speaking out against the violence in Rakhine State.

Police in the southeastern region of Chittagong said on Saturday that they have set up check posts to stop the spread of refugees entering the country through the bordering district of Cox's Bazar.

Meanwhile, the stream of refugees into Bangladesh continues and the Myanmar military is thought to have laid landmines along the border, making the journey even more risky.

This came just a day after Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi called off plans to attend the UN General Assembly session in NY amid growing outrage over the unfolding Rohingya crisis. "India stands ready to provide any assistance required by the government of Bangladesh in this hour of need", the MEA said in the press release.

The British Ambassador to the U.N. Matthew Rycroft said it was the first statement from the Security Council on Myanmar in nine years.

Backing up the pictures, Amnesty said fire sensors also deployed on satellites had detected 80 large-scale blazes across northern Rakhine state since 25 August, when the army launched "clearance operations" in response to attacks by Rohingya militants. "The humanitarian situation is catastrophic".

Bangladesh "urgently calls on the government of Myanmar to repatriate the Rohigya within Bangladesh's borders, and on the worldwide community to pressure Myanmar to do so". "But women and children are arriving hungry and malnourished", said Mr. Guterres.

The violence has mounted global pressure on Myanmar's military leaders and civilian administration, led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. A top United Nations official had earlier said a previous United Nations target of US$77 million (S$104 million) would be inadequate to deal with the crisis.

Earlier, the United Nations top human rights official accused Myanmar of carrying out "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing" against Rohingya Muslims.
