PV Sindhu gets better of Okuhara, wins Korean Super Series

18:18 Here's tomorrow's schedule at the Korea Open Superseries

In a stunning 3 game thriller, Sindhu defeated her Japanese counterpart Nozomi Okuhara in 22-20, 11-21, 21-18.

The Rio Olympic silver medallist Sindhu won in an hour and 24 minutes at the SK Handball Stadium.

Sindhu, like always showed confidence and grit as she won the closely contested opening game.

An exhausted Sindhu was on all fours on the court as Okuhara refused to give up, winning a long rally with a strong smash. Concentrating on the same strategy, the Japanese led 11-9 at the changeover.

The win, though, didn't come easy as Okuhara fought Sindhu right to the end, never giving away even an inch.

Okuhara rallied back in the second game where she managed to trap Sindhu in strenuous rallies. "She had a few points lead and was sharp enough to get one more shuttle back". In Seoul - albeit with the cushioning of a first lead - Sindhu would approach Set 2 strategically, and not go wading into battle everytime Okuhara blew the bugle.

The match, pitting together two unseeded players, was far lower in quality than the women's affair.

A six-point advantage for Sindhu at the mid-game break meant Okuhara was left with a mountain to climb.

Sindhu faces either third seed Sung Ji-Hyun of South Korea or sixth seed He Bingjiao of China in today's semis.

Badminton player Prannoy H.S., who has been training at the same academy as Sindhu, says, "I guess everything has been working in her favour at the moment". And then, there was absolutely nothing to separate the two gladiators at the World Championships last month. But eventually Sindhu remained calm and composed to seal a 21-18 win to bag the title. Sameer tried his best, but the Korean dished out a gritty performance to beat the Indian 20-22, 21-10, 21-13 in a match that lasted 69 minutes.

The win was hailed by nearly everyone across the country, including sportspersons, politicians and celebrities.

Modi through the official Prime Minister's offices' (PMO's) Twitter account wrote, "Congratulations to @Pvsindhu1 on emerging victorious in the Korea Open Super Series".
