Trump Wants to Hold a Military Parade for the Fourth of July

Macron said ahead of his speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday that "I deplore the American decision, but I continue to dialogue with President Trump because I'm convinced that in the end he will understand that his interest, the interest of Americans, is in the Paris Accord". But now he's the commander in chief and talking about holding such a show of military might on the Fourth of July.

"I was your guest at Bastille Day, and it was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen", he told Mr Macron when they met in NY yesterday.

"I deplore the United States decision, and I continue dialogue with President Trump because I am convinced that in the end he will see that it is in the interest of Americans to be a part of the Paris climate pact". "It was 2 hours on the button and was military might", Trump said, according to a pool report. If he follows through he'll get hammered by critics for militarism, particularly by linking military power to the patriotic impulses felt on July 4th, but nationalists will love it. America is in many ways a declining power, albeit not militarily; frankly, we probably *have* reached the stage of imperial insecurity where rolling an ICBM down Pennsylvania Avenue is needed for a national ego boost. I don't know, we're going to have to try to top it, but we had a lot of planes going over. But when you see that and you see all the victories, it was a tremendous thing. It was really so well done. "We're thinking ... of having a really great parade, to show our military strength".

He later told reporters the event might occur as soon as the next Independence Day, adding it might take another year to plan. A major concern was the weight of the vehicles causing structural damage to Washington's streets. He also told The Washington Post he wanted to have several military parades, to display America's military might. "That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue". "That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades".
