Star Trek: Discovery opening credits are unlike any you've seen

We also hear more of the Klingon language in these first two episodes than in perhaps the rest of the Star Trek movies and TV shows combined.

It should be noted that while Discovery may not had reached the pinnacles of its predecessors, the television landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. The talk show, hosted by Matt Mira, originally of the Nerdist, includes guest appearances from "Star Trek's" stars and features discussions of the episode and recaps.

"Discovery", which is the first new "Star Trek" show in more than a decade, also led CBS All Access to its highest signup day ever. There were reports that series co-creator Bryan Fuller, who ultimately left the project over creative disagreements as well as scheduling conflicts with his Starz series American Gods, wanted Discovery to be darker, more openly political, and more aggressively serialized than the version that debuted tonight with back-to-back episodes. That would have exactly the impact CBS wants: driving millions of All Access subscriptions.

"Discovery" had a hard gestation process, and so there are a number of narrative hiccups, likely resulting from the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller while Season One was still being mapped out.

NETFLIXStar Trek Discovery: Sonequa Martin-Green stars as First Lieutenant Michael BurnhamHow many episodes are in Star Trek: Discovery? After last night's premiere, it seems safe to say that this year's standout is Star Trek: Discovery.

The other show feels like a version of Star Trek created to cater to the immediate cultural moment in all the wrong ways.

Star Trek: Discovery launched across the world on Monday, and in celebration a new Klingon trailer for the series was released by Netflix. Yet one would likely have to be a true "Star Trek" completist to feel sold, based strictly on the opening flurry, on signing up - and anteing up - for "Discovery's" full tour. Everything is elaborate and gee-whizzy, which is nice at first - there's no reason a show about the future can't take pleasure in its production design - but then it just doesn't stop, directors David Semel and Adam Kane crowding the frame with more and more detail until we're overwhelmed. That said, we're grading on a curve, since Star Trek pilots are generally pretty lousy.

Thankfully, the premiere has proved the naysayers wrong; Star Trek Discovery is actually pretty good.

"With its level of talent and commitment, Star Trek: Discovery has a decent chance of getting on course to complete its mission".
