Microsoft is shutting down Groove Music in favor of Spotify

Private trades in Spotify shares are valuing the music streaming company at about $16 billion according to people familiar with the deals raising the prospect of a bumper flotation next year

The service won't be shutting down until December 31, 2017, after which date you won't be able to stream, purchase, or download music.

MICROSOFT HAS announced the closure of its Groove Music streaming service, as it enters a partnership to bring Spotify directly to Windows.

An update for the Groove Music app is scheduled for the next Patch Tuesday - to be deployed on October 9 - which prompts paying Groove Music Pass customers to move their music collections over to Spotify accounts.

If you want to download Spotify, there are three separate apps, including ones for Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs, and Windows Phone 8 or higher.

Microsoft's Groove Music has been terminated, with the publishing giant now allying with Spotify instead. Dropping its music streaming service will help it put more focus on its cloud businesses, Windows 10 operating system, and its Surface line. The company has partnered with Spotify to make migrating playlists over to the new service easier. To download your music, open Groove, go to your music collection, and select Purchased; from there, right-click or press and hold your music files and select "download" from the menu.

In a bit of compassion, the Windows team details the steps necessary for Groove users to transition their libraries over to Spotify, at which point, some may be entitled to a 60-day free trial of Spotify's premium service.

Microsoft plans to release an update for Groove Music that includes the option to move music to Spotify.

On the Groove Music front, the service has always faced an uphill battle given the already crowded space of big players like Spotify, Pandora, Apple and other well-entrenched competitors.
