Former footballer Weah and VP set to contest Liberia's presidential run-off

Update: George Weah Continues To Lead Polls In Liberia's Election

Liberian former soccer star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai were comfortably ahead in partial presidential election results announced on Saturday, and look set to contest a run-off next month.

Charles Brumskine remains in third with nearly 10 percent of the votes.

"No matter the outcome of this election, it will result in a transfer of power from one democratically elected government to another for the first time in the lives of many Liberians", it said in a statement.

The country's electoral body had registered 2.18 voters for the Presidential and legislative polls in the country of 4.5 million people.

The election's final results must be announced by October 25.

The latest results represent about 95 percent of all ballots cast.

One of the largest political parties called for a halt to vote-counting Thursday, alleging voting irregularities and fraud.

NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya had earlier hit out at false reports announcing an outright win for Weah and said his officials were doing their best to get accurate official results out as quickly as possible.

Observers from the USA -based Carter Center and National Democratic Institute (NDI) also said they had not identified any major issues with the voting or subsequent counting.

"This commission has not declared any victor", he stressed.

The victor will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first female president who is stepping down after two terms. "We believe we are the viable alternative", Wilmot Paye, national chairman of Boakai's Unity Party, told AFP. "I thank them for participating in this process", she said.

Sirleaf has led Liberia through a period of peace in the aftermath of a 14-year civil war that ended in 2003.
