Tejas Express: 26 fall sick after having food on train

The area officer of IRCTC at Madgaon and the onboard manager have been placed under suspension pending a fact-finding and food-testing report. The passengers complained of pain and nausea after eating the breakfast served by the in-house pantry on the train around 10 in the morning.

Tejas Express is the country's first semi-high speed fully AC train service launched between Karmali railway station in Goa and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Terminal in June this year. "A passenger, who was a doctor, attended to these passengers before the train could be halted at Chiplun, where they were given medical aid".

There are tea and coffee vending machines and snack tables at each coach as catering facility for passengers in the new designed coaches.

The Railway staffs have accompanied passengers to the hospital.

The catering of Tejas Express is managed by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Around 12pm, 3 passengers complained that they were feeling uneasy and felt like vomiting. "And the passengers were taken to government and private hospital", he said. "Food sample have been taken for investigation". When the train arrived in Mumbai at 9.30 pm, numerous other passengers related their ordeal.

A passenger on board who is a doctor attended to them. A couple of minutes later more passengers complained of similar symptoms.

He also said that the IRCTC has collected the raw material from the kitchen. Of the 24 passengers, three are in the intensive care unit. A resident of Dombivali, Tripti Desai said she also vomitted several times on her way to Mumbai but decided not to deboard at Chiplun and instead alighted at Panvel. His son Purohit was admitted to Lifecare Hospital.

The IRCTC said all the passengers now hospitalised were out of danger and the same has been confirmed by hospital authorities.
