PM Modi also appreciated the efforts of ally-turned foe-turned ally Nitish Kumar towards the development of the state.

Addressing the centenary celebrations of Patna University here in presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Modi said Indian universities such as Nalanda and Takshashila attracted students from all over the world.

Replying to a request made by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in his speech earlier about giving Patna University the status of Central University, Modi said, "I would like to say something about a demand that was raised here and met with loud cheers by the young crowd attending this ceremony. We in the Centre attach topmost importance to the development of eastern India".

On the way back from Patna University to the airport, the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister of Bihar, and other dignitaries, visited the Bihar Museum, which showcases the rich culture and history of the State. "The Bihar government and the Centre are working in tandem to help the state prosper", Modi said.

The Prime Minister will arrive in Patna this morning on a day-long visit to Bihar. After attending the Patna University function, the prime minister went to Mokama were he laid the foundation stone of projects under Namami Gange programme and National Highway projects in Bihar. Speaking at the centenary celebrations, Modi applauded the students of the university saying, "In every state, the senior level of the civil services has officers who have studied in Patna University. Projects whose foundation stones are being laid will give impetus to Bihar's development", PM Modi added. "I assure you that the central government will walk with you shoulder to shoulder to fulfil dreams of people of Bihar and take this journey of development to new heights", he said.

"But today while welcoming PM Modi to "his Patna University", he tweeted, "...even I got an invitation, alas very late and with a very short notice...delayed by the "more loyal than the King's people" involved in the affair. "This university has nurtured students who have contributed greatly to the nation", he added.

PM Narendra Modi also spoke about the current and former education system of India.
