Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Denmark seeded for World Cup play-offs

Gareth Southgate

The Indian football team on Monday received a boost in FIFA rankings, a week after qualifying for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup by moving up two places to be at the 105th spot.

Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium and Poland are also top-seeded for the December 1 draw in Moscow.

This latest rankings are to be used for the draw for the 2018 World Cup. The same procedure will then be repeated for the remaining balls in the two pots. Northern Ireland, Ireland, Sweden and Greece will be the unseeded teams in the draw, which takes place tomorrow. Instead of one seeded pot and three pots determined by logistical and geographical reasoning, Federation Internationale de Football Association has changed its ways so that all four pots are determined purely based on the rankings. Slovakia, as the worst-ranked second-placed team, miss out. Based on these rankings, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia and Denmark will be in Pot 1, while Northern Ireland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland and Greece will be in Pot 2. Likewise they can not play Sweden or Greece. Both balls in pot 3 will then be mixed up again and then drawn one after the other.

Four two-legged ties will be played, with the first leg taking place between 9 and 11 November and the return between 12 and 14 of the same month.
