Andreas Athanasiou, Red Wings agree to 1-year contract

Anthony Mantha

Athanasiou had until December 1 to sign with a club, the Red Wings leaving at least some time to spare. He has appeared in all eight of the Red Wings' games this year but has yet to tally a point.

The Wings also had made Athanasiou a two-year offer for $1.9 million a season.

Detroit Red Wings restricted free agent Andreas Athanasiou is expected to decide whether he'll re-sign with the Red Wings or join a European team in the very near future. Sheahan is pointless so far this year but has a big opportunity with the Penguins.

According to CapFriendly, the Red Wings have $0 in cap space with 22 players on their 23-man roster. The development of Athanasiou with the National Hockey League roster is of the utmost importance for the Red Wings, as it is for all National Hockey League prospects. In 20 playoff games, Wilson had three goals and three assists.

The Red Wings have traded forward Riley Sheahan and a 2018 fifth round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Scott Wilson and a 2018 third round pick. The contract, though more than doubled from his entry level deal, will act as a bridge for the Red Wings to get Athanasiou back in the fold. "This thing is either going to get done here in the next day or so, or it's likely he's going to sign to play in Europe and who know when or if he'll be back in the Red Wing lineup". MLive reported that Athanasiou had been contemplating offers to play in Russia's KHL since late August.

Now that Athanasiou is under contract with the Red Wings it will be interesting to see if he can parlay his one-year deal into a successful campaign worthy of a long-term commitment with a significant raise next offseason.
