Syria not invited to Paris climate talks despite joining

The Paris climate summit reached an agreement

Yesterday, the Syrian government announced plans to join the Paris Climate Accord, leaving the U.S.as the lone country opposed to the deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced in June his intention to withdraw from the Paris pact, calling it a "bad deal" and saying it "fails to live up to our environmental ideals".

It will then take one year to fully withdraw, meaning the earliest the United States could quit is the day after the 2020 USA presidential election.

Katmawi said Syria will seek foreign aid to help it meet its commitments under the climate accord, which aims to limit global warming to under 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 F).

"I would like to affirm the Syrian Arab Republic's commitment to the Paris climate change accord", deputy Environment Minister Wadah Katmawi told a meeting of nearly 200 nations at the November 6-17 climate talks in Bonn, Germany.

Syrian government sources told AFP today that Assad had already promulgated a bill ratifying the agreement adopted by parliament last month.

Mr Trump has said he will pull out of the Paris agreement unless Washington can secure more favourable terms for American businesses and taxpayers.

White House spokeswoman Kelly Love said the United States hasn't changed its position on climate change and pointed to a statement by the Trump administration when Nicaragua joined the agreement.

The summit aims at promoting green projects and providing new funding sources, a few weeks after separate talks that are now being held at a global climate conference in Bonn, Germany.

While the Obama administration initially signed on to the agreement in December 2015, President Trump voiced plans to leave it this June, claiming that switching over to clean energy will hurt the US economy.

"If the government of Syria cared so much about what was put in the air, then it wouldn't be gassing its own people", she said, referring to the Damascus regime's brutal civil war tactics. It's "very unfair, at the highest level, to the United States", he said.

France co-organizes the summit with the United Nations and the World Bank.
