Ventura's status still in question after Italy eliminated

World cup : the massive cost of the elimination for Italy

Fabrizio Ravanelli said he would "bend over backward" to reappoint former Italy head coach Antonio Conte following Gian Piero Ventura's sacking.

The 49-year-old's future in west London has been a constant source of speculation this term after he made comments about one day heading back to Italy, and Del Piero admitted he would love to see Conte enter the dug out of his national side once more if he does head home.

The Italian federation (FIGC) initially issued a statement saying that Ventura was "no longer" the coach without clarifying whether he had been sacked or resigned.

But FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio will remain in his position despite pressure on him to also resign after a defeat dubbed in the national press as an "apocalypse" for Italy.

In fact, since the former Torino coach took over in July 2016, Italy have lost three matches - against France in Bari (3-1), Spain in Madrid (3-0) and Sweden in the World Cup first-leg play-off in Solna (1-0) - winning nine and drawing four.

Many Italian newspapers also called for the resignation of Tavecchio following the World Cup fiasco, but in Wednesday's statement, the FIGC said he had declined to quit.
