Trump made the announcement during a Cabinet meeting.

"This designation will impose further sanctions and penalties on North Korea and related persons, and supports our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime that you've all been reading about and, in some cases, writing about", the president said. It limits USA foreign assistance, bans defense exports and sales, boost limits on exports of dual-use items and affects financial transactions, according to the State Department.

At the request of Warmbier's family, six Democratic and six Republican senators later urged the State Department to consider reinstating North Korea to the list.

The State Department, which was facing bipartisan calls to relist the country in the face of growing nuclear threats from Pyongyang, opted to delay the decision until after the President's trip. "There's no evidence that points to the fact North Koreans are state sponsors of terror anywhere", Anderson added. He also mentions multiple North Korean assassinations and assassination plots, including the killing of Kim Jong Nam, Kim's half brother, who was poisoned earlier this year at a Malaysian airport. "The regime also continues its push to develop nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, threatening global security", Royce added. Countries placed on this list are determined by the secretary of state to have "repeatedly provided support for acts of worldwide terrorism" and can face economic consequences as a result. That's when the North was removed in a bid to salvage a deal to halt its nuclear development. At the start of a meeting of the US Cabinet in the White House, Trump accused the DPRK administration of sponsoring 'acts of International Terrorism.' This decision was produced one week after the return of the US President from his Asian tour to five countries: Japan, Republic of South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
