Ex Egypt premier Shafik deported from UAE, arrives in Egypt - family, sources

Update: Former Egyptian PM Ahmed Shafiq left Emirates to Cairo: UAE news agency

Ahmed Shafik is in Cairo and his health is "good", his lawyer has said after meeting the former Egyptian prime minister for the first time since his arrival in the Egyptian capital on Saturday. They deported him in a private plane.

Airport officials said he was escorted out of Cairo airport by unidentified security personnel.

She explained that these "officials" informed him that he must leave the UAE without his daughters while they told his daughters that they are welcome to stay in the UAE.

Shafik said on Wednesday he would run for president in a surprise announcement from the UAE, where he has been based.

The statement came in the wake of her previous media statements in which she noted that her client had forcibly been deported from his residence in the United Arab Emirates to Egypt after he unveiled his intent to run for the upcoming presidential elections.

The family and lawyer said they planned to file complaints with the prosecutor's office around Shafiq's whereabouts.

A spokesman for Egypt's foreign ministry did not immediately answer a call seeking details. But critics say he has jailed hundreds of dissidents and eroded freedoms gained after the 2011 uprising that ousted former leader Hosni Mubarak.

The UAE denied Shafiq's claims.

Earlier this year, he brushed off widespread public criticism and ratified an agreement that cedes sovereignty over two uninhabited Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.

One his aides told AFP that she witnessed officials arriving at the house and was told that Shafiq, seen as a main challenger to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, would be taken to Egypt.

Shafiq, a former government minister and air force commander, announced last week he plans to run for president in 2018.

State-owned newspapers published a story calling Shafiq calling "the fleeing air marshal" and said his lawyer had made deals with outlets sympathetic to the banned Muslim Brotherhood to help with Shafiq's campaign. He has also been accused of "destabilizing" Egypt.

It is the chief prosecutor's prerogative to investigate the complaint and, depending on his decision, refer Shafiq to trial. "We presented him with every facility and generous hospitality despite our severe reservations about some of his positions", Gargash said.

"I don't think that he would take such a big political risk of insulting his hosts of over five years, who effectively gave him refuge while he was facing criminal charges in Egypt".

But his government is fighting a stubborn Islamist militant insurgency in the Sinai region and has also enacted painful austerity reforms over the a year ago to revive the economy but that critics say have dented his popularity.
