Subaru models earn top IIHS safety awards

Source CBS

Of the hundreds of vehicle models on the road today, only 15 have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2018 due to tougher safety requirements when it comes to passenger side front collisions. This year, a new test was included - simulating what happens when the front corner of the passenger's side smacks into a tree or pole.

The Institute's headlight ratings also are relatively new, with the first ones being released in March 2016.

To earn the IIHS 2018 Top Safety Pick+ award a vehicle must receive a "Good" rating for five tests of high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test and evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. The Crosstrek and Forester earn Top Safety Pick, also with option front-crash prevention and specific headlights. This new test sends a vehicle into a barrier at 40 miles per hour with just 25 percent of the vehicle's front end overlapping the barrier on the passenger side. "Manufacturers have been taking this issue seriously since we first shed light on it, and we're confident that good small overlap protection will become the norm on the passenger side, just as it has on the driver side". The institute's Top Safety Pick+ winners include small cars, midsize cars, large luxury cars and midsize SUVs.

Overall, Hyundai posted six vehicles and Subaru four in the "Top Pick Plus" category.
