Shelby will not vote for Roy Moore

Steve Bannon Joins Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore At Campaign Rally

The Republican candidate - backed by President Donald Trump - is Roy Moore, a former state judge known for his battles to publicly display the Ten Commandments.

Friday's campaign rally was Trump's first since September, when he went to Alabama to campaign for Senator Luther Strange, who lost the Republican run-off election to Mr Moore.

Mr Trump said Mr Moore's opponent, Doug Jones, is a "liberal Democrat" who would be "completely controlled" by Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi in the House and Chuck Schumer in the Senate.

Trump, who overcame allegations of sexual misconduct to win last year's presidential election, looked past the charges against Moore and formally endorsed the former Alabama judge this week for the seat once held by Jeff Sessions, now the US attorney general.

The Roy Moore accuser who pointed to her signed yearbook to bolster her claim of abuse against the Republican Senate candidate acknowledged that she wrote notes underneath his signature.

Jones volunteer Dana Ellis, a 64-year-old nurse, navigated icy sidewalks in Birmingham's Kingston neighborhood, which is overwhelmingly African-American, to ensure likely Jones supporters vote on Tuesday.

"I didn't vote for Roy Moore". Then in a small, whiny voice, Trump noted, "There was a little mistake made, she started writing things in the yearbook - what are we gonna do?"

"A lot of smoke, there's got to be some fire there", Shelby said.

Multiple women have come forward to accuse Moore of pursuing them when they were teenagers, including one who said he groped her when she was 14 and another who said he assaulted her at age 16.

Trump also told the crowd: "We can not afford - this country, the future of this country - can not afford to lose a seat in the very, very close United States Senate".

"Did you see what happened today?"

Nelson is represented by famed liberal attorney Gloria Allred, and Trump told rally-goes, "Anytime you see [Allred] you know something is going wrong".

A large number of Alabama residents were in the audience at Trump's rally at the packed Pensacola Bay Center. In addition to celebrating himself and how well his presidency is going, Trump predicted that he would be hard to defeat in the next election and ranted about the usual topics and suspects, from the Paris Accord and chain migration to people who won't say "merry Christmas" and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The allegations notwithstanding - and Moore has denied them - Trump said Jones would oppose his agenda.

Moore might still lose what should be an easily winnable race for a Republican.

Trump also derided a "rigged system" at the rally, even though he won the 2016 presidential election. Republicans now have a 52-48 GOP edge in the Senate.

Alisha Maddalena described herself as a "strong woman" who still doesn't believe Moore's accusers.

"We're the big piggy bank that everybody likes to rob", said Trump.

Trump said the United States has "thousands of people right now under surveillance", without offering more details.

The boisterous crowds inside the Pensacola Bay Center and their enthusiastic reactions during Trump's speech resembled the days of the presidential campaign a year ago.

"People are realising that they don't have to vote Republican", Howell said.
