We accept this arrangement because it benefits us - we can access huge libraries of online media in seconds, and those libraries are tailor-fit to our preferences - and also because we're not usually confronted with less savory aspects of the arrangement. What we watch is a personal thing, and it can be revealing, or assumed to be revealing.

So much for that. Others went as far as criticising them for revealing confidential viewing habits.

But even though it's silly, "A Christmas Prince" has become something of a cult hit for Netflix, and has already created some superfans. (Hi, Google, you're looking particularly attractive these days.) While it shouldn't raise any eyebrows that Netflix knows exactly how many times you've rewatched Parks and Rec this year, it is interesting to consider the ramifications of this data being accessible to different groups within the company.

As Nilay Patel remarked Monday, Netflix actually lobbied against a law meant to protect consumer privacy in 2013.

While the tweet was clearly intended as a joke, it didn't sit well with some customers who found the message "creepy".
