Nintendo Risks Pissing Off Developers With Delay Of 64 GB Game Cards

INQ's best and worst of tech in 2017

The Nintendo Switch has been enjoying some good sales numbers, especially thanks to the holiday season, and their first-party titles have been topping many Game of the Year lists.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that 64GB Nintendo Switch game cards, originally meant to be available for developers in the second half of 2018, have now been pushed back to 2019 due to technical issues. This has seen a $10 premium on the Switch version of L.A. Noire, and Square Enix adding on extra for its Dragon Quest Heroes games as the latter ships on the bigger 32GB cartridge.

Right now, the Switch's cartridges max out at 32GB. That's too small for games such as Doom and Breath of the Wild which also require gigabytes of data be downloaded.

Nintendo allegedly cited unknown technical issues with the 64GB game cards that would delay the roll out.

Nintendo planned to release 64GB game cards in the second half of 2018 to support larger games, but it appears those cards won't be ready for another full year or more.

By comparison, Blu-ray discs for the PS4 and Xbox One can hold 50 GB of data.

As Kotaku previously reported, Nintendo's Switch games keep their size slim, with downloads for Super Mario Odyssey, Arms and Splatoon 2 ranging from 2-6GB.

There are some problems with the Nintendo Switch cartridges themselves. WSJ says that those developers now "may wait" until the larger cartridges are available before releasing their games. What that means for Switch owners is reduced load times and they also don't have to suffer from installing loads of data. That does come with a setback though, game developers, especially the ones located in the USA need much more capacity for their data heavy games.

IGN has reached out to Nintendo for comment.
