The Xmotion (pronounced cross motion) was revealed at the Detroit motor show overnight, promising room for six passengers across three rows in a "potentially ground breaking compact SUV" that is as at home in the city as it is weekend adventures. At the rear, it's Japanese woodwork and puzzles - or kumiko - which have inspired the taillamps, which are in fact holograms to give their illusion of physical structure. That means the floor of the Xmotion is a river, the centre console acts as a bridge - and the main console of the auto uses a joinery technique usually found in Japanese temples and shrines.
The design is a bridge between traditional and modern Japanese craftsmanship, architecture and technologies showing Nissan's deep Japanese heritage can coexist with modern technology.
Although the vehicle that debuted Monday morning is officially nothing more than a show auto, Nissan says the Xmotion "signals (its crossover) design direction for 2020 and beyond".
"Careful attention was especially paid to the grain direction, texture and even the aroma of genuine wood to look and feel as if the whole instrument panel and console were cut out of a single Japanese cedar tree", Nissan says.
Nissan's designers have put its traditional SUV design language through boot camp, where it's been beefed up with bulky fenders and razor sharp lines complemented by not-so-subtle garnishes around the cavernous front intakes.
Nissan's press release did not give away that information, nor did the company point out if the Xmotion is a self-driving vehicle.
Nissans vision of a future SUV is partially made from wood and as a digital fish living inside of it.
With Toyota's 4Runner seeing a sales surge, the Wrangler continuing to top sales for Jeep, and Ford bringing back the Bronco, perhaps the time is nigh for Nissan to explore the great outdoors once again. Seven digital screens grace the interior of the Xmotion, with three main displays and two each end spanning the dash.
Instead of using a key or fob, meanwhile, the Xmotion ramps up security by relying on fingerprint identification.
Your personal assistant takes the shape of a koi carp.
The Nissan Xmotion concept has a futuristic steering wheel and digital screens stretching through most of the cabin. "It is created to make your life easier and the journey and more exciting and enjoyable". However, we do know it comes with Nissan's much talked about Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system, so prepare to take this bad boy off-road. As attractive as it is, a Japanese landscape would never be complete without technology.
