Upbeat GM Forecast Based on High-Margin Pickups, Not More Sales

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Front Side View

The Silverado will also be fitted with more aluminum and high-strength steel which will mean that the 2019 model will be lighter as well.

The all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 will be available with eight different trim packages, which Chevrolet managers say translates into a truck for every buyer.

Price and trim details for the new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado are expected to be laid out in the coming weeks.

One area GM has focused on is the new interior design for the cabin, to address customer feedback that asked for comfortable seats, more cargo space on the inside, and controls that are easier to use.

This, the Silverado's most significant switch-up since 2014, has set its aim on not only matching its fellow Detroit-bred rivals but toppling them in the meantime. Like the body, the Silverado's fully boxed steel frame is 40 kilograms lighter and 10 per cent stiffer, thanks to the use of - you guessed it - high-strength steel. Parts that swing, including doors, the hood and the tailgate, are lighter aluminum, but stationery parts such as the bed, are still steel. The 3-liter and 6.2-liter engines can be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

"Reshaping the company over the last few years has allowed us to deploy resources and capital to higher-return opportunities including our next-generation trucks and establishing leadership in the future of mobility", GM president Dan Ammann said in a statement released Tuesday morning. "The result is a truck that's bigger, bolder, but a lot more functional and efficient".

All full-size trucks from the Detroit Three are getting a redesign for the 2018 or 2019 model year. "That insight shaped our design strategy with eight distinct models, each with a unique personality to fit different customers, from the affordable "Work Truck" model to the luxurious 'High Country'".

The 2019 Silverado is also built on a new platform. This ranges from the familiar LT model to the newly-introduced Custom and Trailboss versions.

More news: North American Car, Truck and Utility of the year revealed

GM's Earnings per share adjusted for exceptional items, a benchmark in North America, will be "at the high end of the range of $ 6 to $ 6.50" of GM's latest forecast, a record high, according to the largest U.S. automaker whose financial for the year 2017 results will be announced on February 6th.

Despite larger dimensions, the all-new pickup truck is 450 pounds lighter than its predecessor.

Power unit choices will include new 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 options, as well as a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel, where the latter could end up to be the best performing diesel in the segment, according to GM exec, Mark Reuss. There are also now 12 tie-down points, each capable of supporting up to 500 pounds - twice as strong as those in the previous model.

Big pick-ups with high profit margins made up almost a third of the 3 million vehicles sold in the United States in 2017 by GM. The LT Trailboss adds the same features to the LT trim as the Custom Trailboss adds to the Custom; the RST boasts full LED lighting, up to 22-inch wheels with all-season tires, and body-color trim. Exact pricing information and fuel economy figures will be revealed closer to the pickup's official on-sale date.
