KU, Boston Celtics great JoJo White dies at 71

Jo Jo White pauses to acknowledge applause during the enshrinement ceremony for the Class of 2015 of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass. Friday Sept. 11 2015. At right is White's Boston Celtics teammate Hall of Famer Da

White was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2015. "He was probably one of my biggest supporters from day one since I got here", Rondo said after his team's 116-113 win. "I send my condolences to the White family".

White had been fighting cancer for a number of years and in May 2010, he underwent surgery to have a tumor removed, The New York Daily News noted.

He spent a decade with the Celtics between 1969 and 1979 before short spells with the Golden State Warriors and Kansas City Kings at the end of his career.

Among all the accolades he received from playing the game, White deserved even more for the type of man he was off the court. "Two-time National Basketball Association champion, Finals MVP and Olympic gold medalist - a model of consistent excellence and uncommon poise", National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.

White won NBA championships with the team in 1974 and 1976, winning the NBA Final MVP during the team's second run. In retirement, he had served as a community ambassador with the Celtics.

Boston will likely make a video tribute to White in some fashion during an upcoming home game at TD Garden to honor him.

The team confirmed that White, a Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist who won two National Basketball Association championships with the Celtics, had died.

Before going pro, he played on the 1968 USA Olympic basketball team in Mexico City, Mexico, which won the gold medal despite numerous top prospects at the time not playing on it. His No. 10 jersey was retired by Boston on April 9, 1982.
