Sydney train crash sends passengers flying, injures 16

Multiple ambulances have been sent to the scene

No one was trapped inside the train, the NSW Police said, although there were earlier reports that claim three passengers were "trapped" and were later freed.

Brett Saunders witnessed the crash just before 10am, which he described as "horrifying".

"Sydney Trains is aware of an incident involving one of our trains hitting a buffer at Richmond Station".

Passenger Jaiden Ruttley, who was towards the back of the train, said it felt like "the whole train had lifted up in the air".

Sydney Trains made headline again following the crash, which came after its network went into meltdown two weeks ago with delays and station closures.

Paramedics treated 15 people following the accident.

There were sixteen people injured including a 21-year-old man who suffered a suspected leg fracture.

Fifteen people were taken to hospital on Monday, January 22, after a train crashed into a barrier in the northwest of Sydney, Australia's largest city.

Transport NSW confirmed no customers or staff remain trapped. "There was a huge amount of dust", he said.

Talks between Sydney and NSW trains management and train unions reached an impasse on Monday night after the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) rejected an offer from train bosses deemed to be "not up to scratch".

He said the 10 other commuters had suffered less serious injuries but predicted the number of those injured would rise.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance described it as a "very serious incident" and investigations were underway by three separate regulators including National Rail Safety and the state's Office of Transport Safety Investigations.
