Supermoon, Blue Moon, Lunar Eclipse All Coming Jan. 31

A total lunar eclipse in 2014 turned the moon orange and red

Ever heard the term 'once in a blue moon?' This refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. The last time a total lunar eclipse was visible from Taiwan was April 4, 2015, according to the CWB, which added that the next one visible in Taiwan will occur on September 7, 2025.

The super blue moon eclipse is the first of only two total lunar eclipses for 2018.

January 31's supermoon, according to the space agency, will also feature a total lunar eclipse - when the Earth, sun and moon line up in such a way that the Earth blocks the sunlight that would otherwise reflect off the moon.

While the entire US will get a partial view of the moon that day, NASA researchers say sky watchers in Alaska, California, and Hawaii will get the best look at the Super Blue Blood Moon.

"For the [continental] USA, the survey will be best in the West", Gordon Johnston, program official and lunar blogger at NASA home office in Washington, said in the announcement.

Like the Earth, half the moon is illuminated by the sun at any one time. First up? Blue moons.

"The supermoons are a great opportunity for people to start looking at the Moon, not just that once but every chance they have", Petro said.

Speaking to the Times of India, Jayant Ganguli, a technical officer at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium in Kozhikode said, "The partial shadow on the moon would be seen at 4:21 pm, while the complete lunar eclipse would be visible at 6:21 pm". As light filters through the Earth's atmosphere it makes the moon glow red.

NASA has a very scientific not-at-all scary explanation for the crimson or copper hue you might see that night.

Resident should set their alarms to 5:52 a.m., MST, on January 31 if they want view a total lunar eclipse. At 4:51 a.m. CST the penumbra - or lighter part of Earth's shadow - will touch the moon. The rare "Super Blue Bloody Moon" is a combination of three phenomena together. By about 6:15 a.m. CST the Earth's reddish shadow will be clearly noticeable on the moon. The blue moon designation has nothing to do with color.

The last time a total lunar eclipse was visible in Miami was on December 21, 2010, which also happened to be the winter solstice - a rare event that hadn't happened since 1638.

You can check when the lunar eclipse begins for your city here.
