Caspian Region Backs Turkey's Afrin Operation In Syria

Erdogan's office said the Turkish leader urged Trump in the phone call to halt the U.S. supply of weapons to the Syrian Kurdish militia.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday spoke with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and urged him to limit his forces' assault against a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria, the White House said, according to AFP.

Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, aims to draw Turkey away from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and position itself as a broker between the Turks, Kurds and Syrian regime. Now, as that campaign winds down, USA officials worry the days-old Turkish offensive will lead to another uncontrollable surge of violence and complicate a settlement of the war.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that the advancing Turkish troops are facing stiff resistance in Afrin, while the SOHR reported Turkish airstrikes had been witnessed in almost 20 villages.

Churches in the Syrian city of Afrin are pleading for help from the worldwide community amid deadly attacks carried out by Turkish forces on Kurdish-controlled areas in the war-ravaged nation.

Iran's reaction to Turkey's military operation is not muted either.

"Starting in Manbij, we will continue to thwart their game", he said.

While the United Nations and its Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have supported Turkey's Red Crescent in accommodating Syrian refugees inside Turkey, they stopped operations in Afrin since the Turkish offensive began, Kinik said. On Wednesday, Kurdish officials said airstrikes hit in the vicinity of the Nissan 17 Dam, which provides power and water to the area, without damaging it.

"Here again, the innocent civilians are paying the price for political interests under the pretext of fighting against the terrorist", said Youkhana, who runs Christian Aid Program Northern Iraq, which provides aid to displaced Iraqis around the city of Dahuk.

But earlier in the day, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper cited what it called "unconfirmed reports" as suggesting that there is a Kurdish tendency to agree with the Syrian government on the entry of the Syrian army to Afrin. Another 48 Syrian fighters fighting alongside the Turkish military against the YPG were also killed, said the Observatory.

In Washington, McKenzie said the USA and Turkey were continuing talks about a "secure zone" but there had been no final decision.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said the operation, which involves Turkish troops accompanied by allied Syrian rebels and backed by war planes, artillery, and tanks, was aimed at creating a security zone some 30 kilometers deep inside Syria.

On Wednesday evening, rockets fired from Syria killed two people and wounded 11 more in the Turkish border province of Kilis.

A message sent to journalists from an unnamed Turkish government official also refuted United States accounts.

The US hopes to use the YPG's control in northern Syria to give it the diplomatic muscle to revive UN-led talks in Geneva on a deal that would end Syria's civil war.
