Trump to unveil new immigration proposal on Monday

Dana Milbank: What on Earth does President Trump want?

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he is willing to consider giving illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children citizenship in 10 to 12 years. "It's going to happen at some point in the future", Trump said of the immigrants eligible for some version of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Trump has ended but is urging Congress to replace. "Since that time, President Donald J. Trump and his administration have hosted dozens of meetings with Republican and Democrat leadership and rank and file members of the House and Senate to discuss these reforms to find a bipartisan path forward", Sanders said.

But Democrats in both chambers have for months slammed a list of immigration principles the White House rolled out in October, and many remain skeptical about Trump's U.S. -Mexico border barrier proposal.

Alexander said he was doing no such thing, suggesting she's confusing him with her boss Trump, whose campaign slapped an ad on the air, just hours into last week's government shutdown over the two political parties deadlock over immigration, announcing Democrats therefore are complicit in any murders perpetrated by immigrants.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders cited a Sunday report from The Daily Caller that admonished the media's obsession with the ongoing investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Trump also wants to limit the family members that immigrants are able to sponsor to join them in the USA and either replace or transform a visa lottery aimed at increasing diversity.

Trump called it an "incentive" for the immigrants, who largely have known no other country beside America, to work hard and do a "great job".

"I think your faith can help you get through the good and the bad days", Sanders said.

"What the president did clearly worked", Sanders responded with unearned smugness, noting that Trump's disengagement allowed the crisis to be solved by Schumer. Trump announced he was ending DACA previous year. The president also didn't reach a deal with Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who reportedly offered far more money for the border wall.

White House officials said that would be left to Congress to negotiate.

He said, however, that if a deal is not struck by then, the issue would be taken up in debate on the Senate floor.

Asked what advice her father, a former Southern Baptist pastor, gave her when she was named as White House press secretary, Sanders said it was the same advice he has given her throughout her life.

That includes chief of staff John Kelly, who twice intervened when it appeared Trump was warming to moderate immigration deals, and Stephen Miller, the senior policy adviser who has repeatedly encouraged a harder line in negotiations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said if senators can not produce a compromise plan by February 8, he would open a debate on immigration legislation that would be "fair to all sides".
