Australia wins men's, women's titles at Sydney Sevens

Australia thumped South Africa 29-0 in the men's final on Sunday night, backing up the Aussie women's 31-0 towelling of New Zealand in their gold medal match earlier in the day at Allianz Stadium.

An Upbeat Shujaa sevens has come up to make a memorable day two at the Sydney sevens with two wins, recovering from a 7-5 loss to Argentina to progress to the quarter finals.

The hosts were untroubled in the semi-final, exploiting yellow cards to Argentina in both halves to book their second grand final appearance at the Sydney World Series leg in three years.

They conceded five tries to none and never looked likely to respond, despite the attacking presence of Portia Woodman and Michaela Blyde.

The Aussie women's team were equally brilliant in shutting out New Zealand 31-0 to make it an Australian double celebration.

So dominant through their pool play and in Saturday's matches against Ireland and Canada, the Kiwis collapsed at the final hurdle.

South Africa, the Dubai Sevens champions, would blow away United States of America 35-7 in the Cup semi-finals for the final showdown with Australia, who stopped Argentina, who reached the final in Cape Town, 28-0 in the other Cup semi.

Australia has blazed its way into this afternoon's semi-final against Russian Federation without conceding a point while Cherry and Friedrichs have helped themselves to a combined total of five tries in the preliminary matches.

Of course, New Zealand have been nearly equally as impressive, they've dominated their opponents too, and this promises to be a titanic showdown.

In the dying minutes of the first-half, the burly Willy Ambaka continued with his impressive performance at the Sydney Sevens with a magnificent try which was easily converted by Kenya Harlequins Eden Agero. "We have worked really hard since Dubai".

"This is the goal we set out to achieve this year", Holland said.

It jarred the New Zealanders in tackles, loosening passes, and made it impossible for the defending world champions to play their usual fluent style. Another tournament favorite, Fiji, also bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing 24-7 to the United States.
