China to have bigger footprint than Russia — CIA director

Director Pompeo Marks One Year Anniversary at AEI

CIA Director Mike Pompeo said he fully expects Russian Federation to seek to interference with the 2018 midterm elections as they did in 2016.

In January 2017, the United States intelligence community released a report about Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election.

"I have every expectation that they will continue to try and do that, but I'm confident that America will be able to have a free and fair election [and] that we will push back in a way that is sufficiently robust that the impact they have on our election won't be great", Pompeo said.

"I haven't seen a significant decrease in their activity", he said.

The first primary of the midterms is just over a month away, March 6, in Texas.

On Monday, the Trump administration opted not to introduce new sanctions on Russian Federation over the allegations that it interfered in the 2016 elections, despite a sanctions bill passing with large bipartisan support last July. Numerous US committees are now investigating Moscow's alleged meddling in the November 8 vote.

As recently as December, in an interview with The New York Times, Trump reiterated a repeated claim that the Russian story is a hoax, or fake news, concocted by Democrats as "an excuse for losing an election".

He also warns china's influence already reaches into a wide variety of American institutions, saying, "The Chinese are very active and we welcome them".

"This threat existed long before President Trump took office, and unless he takes action now, it will continue long after his administration", Sen. "There is no point [for Russian Federation to interfere in United States elections]".

"While President Trump stands practically idle, Mr. Putin continues to refine his asymmetric arsenal and look for future opportunities to disrupt governance and erode support for the democratic and global institutions that the United States and Europe have built over the last 70 years".

Early a year ago the CIA and other intelligence agencies issued a report that found the Kremlin worked to influence the 2016 election.

"I don't do fine lines". "We are going to go out there and do our damnedest to steal secrets on behalf of the American people", he explained, "and I wanted to get back on our front foot".
