Android users can now tell Alexa to text someone

Google gunning for Amazon's smart speaker market

Now, when you say, "Alexa, send a message", you'll be prompted to choose between sending an SMS message or an Alexa app message.

Sent messages will be displayed in your smartphone's text app.

Customers can ask Alexa to send messages, and Alexa will figure out how to route it appropriately.

The catch is that the messages only work through Android phones, once the messaging capability is activated in the Alexa app in the phone.

Amazon is making it a bit easier to communicate with friends and family with your Echo. But users on other platforms can still probably receive it. Alexa users, try it out and let us know if it's as easy as advertised. While iPhone users may be missing out on this, the company has not revealed as to when it would roll out SMS support to Alexa in the worldwide markets.

SMS texting should be rolling out now to all Amazon devices that are Alexa-enabled and support messaging and calling, though the new feature isn't available yet on third-party Alexa speakers. It didn't say when it would roll out SMS support to Alexa's worldwide markets.
