The poll results reemphasize the need to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease, the importance of knowing your numbers, as well as the actions women can take to improve their overall health.

The health district would like to bring attention to The Heart Truth, a national education program for women to help raise awareness about heart disease and its risk factors.

Wearing red and dining in at one of the participating restaurants to receive a free heart-healthy menu item of the restaurant's choice.

February comes with a whole lot of hearts and the reminder to protect your own.

Rebecca Adams, a Wear Red Representative says, "A lot of people don't realize that Heart Disease is the number one cause of death".

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease, listed as the underlying cause of death, accounts for almost 800,000 deaths in the United States, and that translates to about one in every three.

Heart disease is South Carolina's leading killer for women among all racial and ethnic groups. In addition, landmarks and buildings around the city and state will be illuminated in red to help raise awareness about women's heart health.
