Poland Cancels Bennett's Planned Visit, Bennett Says 'I'm Honored'

Poland's president to sign controversial Holocaust bill

"I decided that I would sign the law on the Institute of National Remembrance, and I will give it to the Constitutional Court", Duda said in his statement on the law on the Institute of National Remembrance, the Office of the Polish president said on its official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

As now written, the legislation calls for prison terms of up to three years for falsely attributing the crimes of Nazi Germany to Poland.

The legislation, which still needs the president's signature to take effect, was introduced by Poland's governing right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party to stop people from erroneously describing Nazi German death camps as being Polish, simply due to their geographical location.

Andrzej Duda said in a televised address the legislation would safeguard Poland's global reputation, but Israel called for amendments, saying the two countries had a "joint responsibility" to preserve the memory of the Holocaust.

"Unfortunately, it is not only the nationalists but also the whole Polish society which will have to pay the price", said Grabowski, who is also a member of the Polish Center for Holocaust Research in Warsaw.

"The United States is disappointed that the president of Poland has signed legislation that would impose criminal penalties for attributing Nazi crimes to the Polish state", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement.

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it will continue to discuss the bill with Poland.

Duda is likely announce his decision on the bill on Tuesday, RMF FM radio said.

But that will happen after he has signed the bill into law.

Poland has canceled Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett's visit this week because of Bennett's reaction to the measure. The proposal has angered Israel, which says it will stifle discussion about the Holocaust and enable Poland to whitewash the role of Poles who killed or denounced Jews to Germans during the German occupation of Poland during WWII.

"There is not the slightest doubt as to who was responsible for the extermination camps, operated them and murdered millions of European Jews there: namely Germans", he said.

Israeli officials have voiced strong objections to the law, saying it is an attempt to rewrite history.

But he said the Polish state bore no responsibility because it ceased to exist following the invasion by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

"No legislation will change the past", Bennett said.

The country has long objected to the use of phrases like "Polish death camps", which suggest the Polish state in some way shared responsibility for camps such as Auschwitz.

Bennett said only a small number of Poles risked their lives to save Jews during the war. But research published since the fall of communism in 1989 showed that thousands also killed Jews or denounced those who hid them to the Nazi occupiers, challenging the national narrative that Poland was exclusively a victim.
