George W Bush says Russian Federation meddled in 2016 USA polls

Then-U.S. President George W. Bush with Russian President Vladimir Putin

"There's pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled".

"Whether Russia affected the outcome is another question", Bush said. Our democracy is only good if people trust the results. After a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hanoi, Vietnam, in November, Trump said Putin was "sincere" in his denials.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied accusations by US intelligence officials and others of interfering in foreign elections, including the 2016 USA vote.

"He's got a chip on his shoulder", Bush said of Putin.

In October, Bush said the Russian government "made a project of turning Americans against each other".

"Americans don't want to pick cotton at 105 degrees, but there are people who want to put food on their family's tables and are willing to do that", he said.

In an apparent criticism of the immigration policies US President Donald Trump, Bush called for changes in US immigration rules, saying it was important to recognise that the United States had a history of welcoming people regardless of their religion or where they were born.

Bush, a Republican, said as quoted by the daily that Putin "can't think, 'How can we both win?' He only thinks, 'How do I win, you lose?'"

Though Bush has avoided explicitly criticizing the Trump administration, he has voiced veiled opposition toward the president's "America First" platform. Democrats immediately rejected the proposal.

Beyond that, he said at the summit hosted by the Milken Institute, a California-based economic think tank, that Americans should be thanking the illegal immigrants for doing jobs they refuse to do. He was sentenced to a decade in prison but served less than two years after a judge reduced his sentence.
