In March 2011, a magnitude-9 quake and resulting tsunami struck the same region. The warning also spread panic about a possible mishap at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant went into meltdown, spewing radiation into the surrounding area. Two strong earthquakes rattled different parts of New Zealand yesterday but there were no initial reports of serious damage or injuries. (more...)

A tsunami warning is in effect for Japan's Fukushima Prefecture after a 7.3-magnitude natural disaster struck off Honshu at 5:59 a.m. Tuesday (3:59 p.m. The U.S. Geological Survey measured Tuesday's quake at a lower magnitude 6.9. Tohoku Electric Power Co said there was no damage to its Onagawa nuclear plant, while the Kyodo news agency reported there was no irregularities at the Tokai Daini nuclear plant in Ibaraki Prefecture.
